James Gordon is a fictional character appearing in the American comic book series Batman, published by DC Comics. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, he first appeared in Batman #27, published in May 1939. Within the stories, he is most often depicted as the Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department and is one of Batman's allies.

His position as a representative of law enforcement who nonetheless cooperates closely with Batman gives him an important role within the Batman stories. This duality—an officer devoted to maintaining order in the crime-ridden city of Gotham while also placing trust in Batman—has been a lasting source of appeal for readers over the years.
