Kathy Kane is a character in DC Comics best known as the first person to appear as the superheroine Batwoman. Created in 1956 by writer Edmond Hamilton and artist Sheldon Moldoff, she was originally introduced as a love interest for Batman. When editorial direction shifted in 1964, she was removed from ongoing stories, and a major 1985 crossover event later retconned her history so that she never becomes Batwoman within the main DC continuity. Since then, she has continued to appear in stories without taking on the Batwoman identity.
Her appeal lies in her historical significance within Batman's supporting cast. Originally conceived to address controversy surrounding Batman's portrayal, her later reimagining as a character separate from the Batwoman mantle gives her a distinctive place in the evolving continuity of DC Comics, making her a notable figure for readers interested in the character's long publication history.
