Éliphas Lévi was a 19th-century French esotericist, ceremonial magician, and writer, born Alphonse Louis Constant. He initially pursued a career in the Catholic Church but left the priesthood in his mid-twenties, and from around the age of forty began to profess knowledge of the occult. He wrote more than twenty books on magic, Kabbalah, alchemy, and occultism. The pen name "Éliphas Lévi" was an adaptation of his given names into Hebrew.
