Katsuki Bakugo is one of the main protagonists of My Hero Academia. His Quirk, Explosion, lets him detonate a nitroglycerin-like substance secreted from his palms, and throughout the story he develops increasingly varied applications of this power, though overusing it causes pain in his arms and shoulders. As a child he bullied the Quirkless Izuku Midoriya, giving him the nickname "Deku," but after losing to Izuku during training at U.A. High School, he begins to see him in a new light. When he is kidnapped by the League of Villains, All Might loses his Quirk while rescuing him, leading Katsuki to blame himself until All Might reassures him otherwise. He later becomes one of the few people, alongside All Might, entrusted with the truth behind Izuku's Quirk.

Katsuki's fierce, competitive personality combined with his relentless drive to grow stronger and the gradual shift in his relationship with Izuku form the core of his appeal. His willingness to confront his past mistakes and complicated bond with his childhood friend give him depth beyond that of a simple rival.
