The term "overlord" refers to a lord at the top of a subinfeudation relationship within the English feudal system. A lord holding a manor or estate could grant part of it to a tenant, thereby becoming that tenant's overlord and being owed services such as military duty. At the apex of this structure stood the monarch, who, following the Norman Conquest, held all land in England under allodial title and had no overlord above himself. Beneath the monarch, tenants-in-chief, and beneath them knights and further subtenants, formed a repeating chain of mesne lord–tenant relationships across generations.
