Sagara Sanosuke is a character in Rurouni Kenshin. Set in a fictional pre-Meiji Japan, he was formerly a member of the Sekiho Army; when the group was destroyed by the Meiji government, he became a fighter-for-hire, fighting for money as an outlet for his anger. Early in the story he encounters the wanderer Himura Kenshin, who defeats him easily and persuades him to give up mercenary work and instead protect people.
