Set at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, the series follows three teams, each made up of a weapon meister and at least one human partner able to transform into a weapon. The meisters must have their weapons consume the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch, in that order, to turn them into "Death Scythes" fit for use by the academy's headmaster Shinigami, the personification of death; failing means starting over from the beginning. The story centers on Maka Albarn and Soul Eater, Black Star and Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with the Thompson sisters.

Each of the three teams has its own personality and fighting style, and the relationship between meister and weapon forms the core of the story. The setting built around death gods and witches is combined with action in which human and weapon partners fight together, a mix that has earned the series a broad following.
