Open the Magic Textbook! ~The Magical Life of a School Transported to Another World~
Sho Sato (16) is an ordinary high school student who wakes up one morning still sitting in a classroom chair — except this classroom is definitely not in Japan.
Welcome to Academia Lumina, a magical academy city where the sky has two suns and students fly past windows on enchanted brooms. "Oh no. I'm in another world," Sho mutters, staring at the ancient magic textbook somehow in his hands.
The textbook is broken-OP in the best possible way: it instantly downloads magic theory into his brain.
Open the Magic Textbook! ~The Magical Life of a School Transported to Another World~ - Two Suns and the Transfer Student of Blazing Flames
When I opened my eyes, there were two suns in the sky.
One golden, one pale blue.
For a while, Sato Sho just stood there. Grass rustled beneath his feet. Wind passed by his ears. His mind hadn't caught up yet.
"……Huh?"
Only one word came out. After that, no more words would come.
In the western sky, a large golden sun——the name Solva somehow floated into Sho's mind——was beginning to set. And in the eastern sky, another sun, glowing pale blue, was slowly rising.
A second sun.
Sho gently pressed his hand to his eyes. Wondering if it was a dream. But he felt the wind against his palm. He smelled grass. Somewhere in the distance, he heard birds singing.
It wasn't a dream.
"……This can't be real."
His voice was hoarse.
Five minutes ago, Sho had been walking home from school normally. Still wearing his Sakura-ga-oka High School uniform——white shirt and navy blazer——he'd been thinking about watching videos on his phone. Then a vortex of light suddenly appeared at his feet, and when he came to, he was here.
He pulled his phone from his pocket. The screen wasn't cracked. He felt relieved for a moment, then noticed the "No Signal" indicator. The map wouldn't open either.
"No signal for real……"
Grassland stretched out in all directions. Gentle hills in the distance. Green trees. A massive stone building complex——
Sho's gaze stopped there.
Beyond the hills in the distance, he could see high stone walls. Inside them, several buildings with spires stood in rows. Made of stone, massive, and somehow extraordinarily grand.
"……I guess I have to go there."
There were no other options.
As Sho started walking, after a while he noticed a strange sensation in his right hand.
An old leather-bound book. Just one.
When did I pick this up? It wasn't from Sakura-ga-oka High School. Actually, he'd never seen it before. The cover had unfamiliar characters and complex geometric patterns embossed on it. The texture was rough, aged.
"I don't remember having this……?"
Tilting his head, Sho examined the book.
That's when he realized it.
The letters on the signs in the landscape were readable. When Sho had thought "I guess I have to go there" in Japanese just moments ago, those words had actually been in a different language——no, that wasn't it. He could read it. From the moment Sho gripped the book, the letters around him, the voices of people he heard in the distance, everything had entered his mind with meaning.
What is this?
More than happy, he felt afraid.
This book did something to me——that sensation spread slowly through his chest. But there was no point in stopping. Sho tucked the book inside his blazer and kept walking.
As he approached the stone walls, he saw movement in the sky. People. People riding broomsticks, flying through the air. Not just one. Several of them. Crossing the sky above as if it were the most natural thing.
There were streetlamps along the path, and they were lit. Even though it was still evening. Looking closer, they weren't electric bulbs. Softly glowing stones were set into stands. They lined up at regular intervals, illuminating the path.
Sho stopped in front of one of them. He poked it lightly with his finger. It wasn't warm. But it was glowing. He thought it was strange, then moved on.
Eventually, the main gate came into view.
Two armored gatekeepers stood there. As Sho approached, one of them immediately stepped forward.
"Show me your student ID."
"Um……"
He didn't have one. He had his Japanese high school student handbook, but that probably wasn't it.
"I'm kind of lost……"
He was about to be honest when the gatekeeper's gaze stopped on Sho's right hand.
The book's cover was peeking out slightly from between his blazer panels.
The gatekeeper's face went pale in an instant.
"……Wait a moment."
He said only that in a low voice, then whispered something to the other gatekeeper. That one took off running at incredible speed.
"Did I pick up something dangerous……"
Sho muttered under his breath. He had a very bad feeling about this.
A few minutes later, three adults came running. They wore long coats and each had a thin staff hanging from their waist. Somehow, Sho knew they were "Magisters"——faculty members of Academia Lumina. The book told him so.
The three stopped in front of Sho and looked at the cover.
"An Arcadian-era……seal rune……"
The oldest-looking man whispered in a trembling voice.
"That was supposed to have been lost 500 years ago……"
A female magister continued. The third remained silent, alternating his gaze between Sho's face and the book.
Sho forced a smile. When you don't understand the situation, just smile.
---
The interrogation room was a plain, modest stone chamber. A table and chairs. One window. Sho was made to sit, and the three magisters lined up across from him. The pressure was immense.
"You're saying you came from another world called Japan."
"……Yes."
"And you somehow had the book in your hand."
"……Yes."
He didn't think they'd believe him. But he had no choice but to tell the truth.
One of the magisters asked him a question.
"Do you know of the Crepuscular Great Severance?"
"……I don't."
He shook his head honestly. The magister thought for a moment, then explained.
Five hundred years ago, in this world, an ancient magical civilization called the "Arcadian Era" suddenly collapsed. Overnight, ancient magic stopped working. Most of the formulas and texts disappeared. That was the "Crepuscular Great Severance"——the cause is still unknown. After that, a scholar named Hervin Paradigm created a new magical theory called "Paradigm Style," which is now mainstream.
"The seal rune from that ancient——Arcadian style——is engraved on the cover of the book you're holding."
With that, the oldest magister placed the book on the table. Sho listened silently.
"There is no precedent for interdimensional transfer. However……if this book is genuine, we cannot say it's a lie."
After the three discussed it for a while, the oldest magister pulled out a single document.
"We will approve your provisional enrollment as a special auditing student. You must follow the rules within the domain. Unauthorized use of offensive magic will result in a maximum one-year ban on magic use."
Sho nodded and took the document.
"Um, where do I sign this?"
"You can read the characters?"
"Once I held the textbook, I could read them."
All three magisters did a double-take in unison.
The room fell silent.
Sho thought "I shouldn't have said that?" but it was too late.
---
"Nova Hall, Building 3, Room 204."
That was all he was told before being handed a key. The magisters left in a hurry.
Walking down the stone corridor, Sho glanced around a little.
Several students passed by. His school-designated white shirt, navy blazer, and black slacks looked subtly different from the students' uniforms here. He felt like he was being stared at. Sho decided not to mind. His star-shaped earring in his left ear swayed.
Room 204 was a modest space. Stone walls, wooden bed, small table. One window. It was so simple it was almost funny.
Sho sat on the bed and looked out the window.
Solva had completely set. In its place, the pale blue light of Lunava spread across the stone-paved streets. Magic lamps glowed softly, and the city shone with an otherworldly light. Students returning on broomsticks crossed the sky.
It was beautiful, he had to admit.
But what spread through Sho's chest was something far heavier than beauty.
"……What time is it back there?"
In Japan, it might already be dinner time. His mother standing in the kitchen, the smell of miso soup, the familiar station announcement on the walk home with friends——it all felt like it was in a place impossibly far away.
He pressed his forehead against the window frame. It was cold.
What good would crying do? First, I need to survive. There's definitely a way back.
He told himself that and swallowed his tears.
His gaze drifted into the distance.
A large building——what looked like a library——had a single light on in its window. Even at this hour. In the window, he could see a silver-haired figure. Turning pages.
"There's someone studying this late……pretty diligent."
He muttered and sighed.
Well, it's none of my business. Tonight I should just think about sleeping.
---
To distract himself, Sho opened the book.
On the first page, ancient characters were arranged. As he read through them——
Warm light flowed into the depths of his mind.
Knowledge entering his head directly. The formulas for flame magic. How to focus, how to move his body. Not the Paradigm style way with chanting and rune drawing. Something simpler, something that moved with just will and emotion——ancient magic.
"This is amazing……I understand, I somehow understand."
He was excited. Genuinely.
Just to try. He gently swung his right hand.
The next moment, not just from his palm but from his entire right arm, a tremendous pillar of flame erupted.
A deafening boom.
Smoke filled the room. The wall, supposedly made of anti-magic stone, was charred black. There was a hole in it.
"Wait, wait, wait!!"
He frantically pulled his hand back. The flames went out. But the hole in the wall didn't.
Immediately after, an alarm bell rang throughout the entire academy.
"Where is it! Is there a fire!"
Angry shouts came from the corridor.
Sho stood in the smoke, staring at the hole in the wall.
Seconds later, the door burst open and two magisters rushed in. Their eyes stung from the smoke as they looked at Sho, then at the hole in the wall, and fell silent.
Silence.
"Do I need to pay for damages or something?"
He asked hesitantly.
"Damages are the least of it! This is a violation of academy law!!"
One of them shouted.
"……A student who puts a hole in anti-magic stone……"
The other whispered in a shaking voice.
"……has never existed in history."
"I'm not happy about being a first in this kind of way."
Sho screamed that in his mind, but couldn't say it out loud.
---
By the next morning, rumors had spread among students Sho didn't even know yet.
"There's a transfer student who put a hole in the dorm wall on the first day."
And Sho had been given a new nickname.
"The Flame Explosion Transfer Student."
"Why did I get the worst possible nickname……"
Sho slumped dejectedly. Understandably so.
But no matter what, he couldn't get last night's sensation out of his head.
That feeling of the magic formula——will and emotion alone made the flames move. It went out of control, but it definitely moved. Something older than Paradigm style. This book definitely has something.
Sho looked at his right hand. Nothing happened. It was quiet.
But deep in his palm, something still felt hot.
